I like to use an ad-filtering proxy. I decided to try Privoxy. They do not have a universal binary for download, so my only choice was to use Macports to download and compile it. I downloaded Macports and used the command
sudo port -v install privoxy
to install Privoxy some weeks back. Privoxy has worked perfectly since then.

Tonight I decided to see if Macports or Privoxy had been updated. Here is the output from my Terminal session.

It’s broken. i’ve only used it once to install one thing and it’s busted. I have no idea what the GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT has to do with Macports, and there is no help whatsoever to be found via Google about this error message.

So since I only had one thing installed via Macports, I removed it
sudo rm -rf /opt/
re-downloaded Macports 1.5.0 and re-reran the self update. Same result. Brand new clean install, and it’s still broken.

I give up. Macports, and Fink before it, are complete pieces of crap that are perpetually broken without support. Avoid them at all costs. In the meantime, download BFilter.

To the moron who put the sticker on the fuzzy dog toy I just bought…

willie_1957_3572977.gifYou’re a complete fucktard. Really. No kidding. Because of you, I can’t get the sticker off the toy without pulling out the fuzzy stuff and practically destroying it. And I don’t want to leave the sticker on there because I don’t want this to happen to my dogs.

You see, removing a sticker from a dog toy should be the most minor part of my day. I should rip it off and never give it a second thought. Instead, it turns into an infuriating ordeal because you and the asshats who design packaging never bother to actually use your product, or you just don’t give a damn. I think I speak for everyone who has a fuzzy dog toy with a sticker when I say, burn in hell.

An open letter to Microsoft about RDC 2.0 beta

Microsoft,

Remote Desktop Connection 2.0 beta sucks. Your system for opening multiple connections is convoluted, at best. I should be able to press command-n to open a new RDC window, just as the new window function works in other OS X apps. Why is this so hard to get right? Please start over.

You’ve copied software in the past. Download CoRD and copy it. We can’t think any less of you than we already do.

PS - Thanks for finally including scaling. You know all those requests you’ve received in the past about making the RDC window smaller? Those requests weren’t about lowering the resolution. They were about scaling higher resolutions.

Ohio’s idiotic smoking ban hurts small businesses

Here’s a picture of a place in Dayton named Kelly’s Corner Cafe which has now shut down because of Ohio’s insanely stupid smoking ban.

According to Krueger, the store lost business after the smoking ban. “There was a significant difference since we had to enforce it,” she said.

“Ninety percent of my customers smoke, and when the cash flow is cut in half, basically overnight, it doesn’t take long before I can’t afford the supplies and manpower it takes to run a business.”

It’s OK Ms. Krueger, there are other people in this world who know what’s better for you and your customers than you do, and they’re willing to use the police power of government and turn ordinary citizens into criminals to save you from yourself.

“The saddest part to me is about our personal and property rights being taken away.”

Exactly right. The only business the anti-smoking kooks in this state and country care about is the business they’ve built spreading falsehoods about smoking and second-hand smoke.

Monday was when I finally let six months of pent-up exasperation over the iPhone explode into the world in the form of 68-pixel tall angry words interspersed with a quiet voice that said, just calm down. But today over at Fake Steve Jobs, I saw the picture that sums up this whole awful ordeal for me. This is exactly the kind of person I had in mind when I wrote my bitter screed Monday. In his condition. Doing exactly what he’s doing.

For the love of God people, it’s just a damn phone! It’s not worth having pictures of your naked, fat, hairy body all over the web, holding up a newspaper with an article that reinforces the readers’ already negative opinion of you. Have some damn dignity.
