A couple of years back, I looked at the sign at the Shell station on the corner and thought to myself, I never thought I’d live long enough to see $2 gasoline. Holy shit.
This week, I looked at the at the sign at the Shell station on the corner and thought to myself, I never thought I’d live long enough to see $2 gasoline. Wow.
It’s funny how expectations change.

I stopped buying gasoline for the most part. I only own two things that use it: a vintage car that gets driven too little, and a lawn mower, that gets used too much!
All of my family’s “daily drivers” are Diesels. This was a deliberate choice on my part. We did this because with a Diesel you have real choice in how you fuel it. I started home-brewing BioDiesel a few years ago with the plan of being self-sufficient before fuel got to be $4 a gallon. I got there just in time. It still costs me to make fuel (roughly $1.50 per gallon, plus my time.) But I have to tell you it is truly liberating. I still buy petroleum every once in a while, but enjoying true energy independence is really nice.
So I don’t complain, worry, or think much about fuel prices. =)

I have no such luxury. I am dependent on “the man” for my living and my life, including energy, a fact which was became more obvious than ever in September when the entire city went dark after the remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through.

This is also not really an option for me. Diesel cars are illegal in New York State, due to emissions regulations. I would’ve bought my Jetta as a diesel if I could. I find that odd since diesel cars are much more fuel efficient. One would think that even if a gallon of diesel puts out more toxins than a gallon of gas, you use far fewer of them, resulting in fewer net emissions.
Of course, this is New York State. The most likely reason is that someone paid off someone in Albany. Yet another of many reasons I wish we could just break off everything from Buffalo to Syracuse and create West New York State (except Ithaca. Albany can keep those pinkos).
