Tonight at dinner at the Big Boy in Bellbrook, I saw a familiar face to Ohioans: former Ohio Governor Bob Taft. I tried to discreetly snap a picture of him from underneath the table. Let the guy have his dinner in peace, I figure. Because he was sitting against the window, this was the best I could get.
I couldn’t figure out why he’d be in our town until I read the Wikipedia article about him. He’s has joined the University of Dayton as a research associate.
He is the great grandson of William Howard Taft, former President and Chief Justice of the United States (and our fattest President). You may also remember that his grandfather, Robert Taft, ran for the Republican nomination against Ike in 1952.

Was Bob Taft a good governor?

I disagreed with his stance on a number of issues. If anything, I’d say he was a clumsy governor because he got into hot water for accepting what were, in the big scheme of things, some gifts that were inconsequential but illegal nevertheless. He plead guilty to some misdemeanors for accepting them and that cast a shadow on his last couple of years in office. Some other state-level members of the Republican party got entangled in other scandals at the same time, and the combined bad news hurt the party in 2006.
