I’ll admit it: I have a problem.
I’m a grown man. I have a job and a mortgage and a relationship and an IQ well above normal. And yet, I’ve developed a borderline obsession with a character on a TV show. Is that normal?

That’s him. I don’t have a shrine in my bedroom with candles, and I don’t daydream about him or any of that fucked up crap, but I do get all giddy when it’s time for the show. (Three times a week - Fox Tuesday at 9:00, and USA Friday and Saturday at 11:00.) I bought the DVDs for myself this past Christmas, and I literally spent all day watching them. What is it I like so much? I mean, in real life, this guy would have been fired and had his ass kicked to a pulp about a thousand times by now. Maybe it’s because he’s living my dream.
I’ll admit we have some attitude in common, but I’ve developed the ability to pretend to be nice, and I’m sure it’s causing me to develop multiple ulcers as I write this.
If I’m ever really sick, I want this guy to work on me. Even though he’s not a real doctor, I think I’d feel better immediately when he smacked his cane on the hospital bed rail to wake me up and say something rude.
It’s a joke people! Sheesh. I’m not that deluded. There’s so little TV I enjoy and I suppose when I find something really good, I cling to it. Interesting people are even more rare than good TV. Interesting people on TV may only happen a handful of times during the life of the universe.
I have my great grandmother’s cane hanging on a coat hook in the front room. Hmmm…

Just to show you how un-clued I am about TV, I have no idea who this guy is… at all.

Well, you could do a lot worse than House. Imagine that you develop this light obsession over Knight Rider…
Oh wait…

Know what you mean, Aaron - took me a similar way. Being from the UK I am also fascinated on how he (Hugh Lawrie) manages it - he’s so well known as a comedian that it is hard to see him in a drama (though the comic timing obviously helps).

I’m amazed at how well he speaks with an American accent. I had no idea he was British until I read it somewhere, and then I saw an interview with him on the DVDs. It was just weird to see him speak with his real accent.

If you want to see him in something particularly different, look out for Blackadder series 3 or 4 - and example on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaPxX-ks95Y - He’s below the white face powder as Prince Gearge..

Yep, definitely check out Blackadder. Absolutely superb show and Lawrie excells at something so different from his role in House I dread to think what impact it may have on those who’ve never seen it.
Going to America and making a sharp turn in his career was a good move. Lawrie’s well respected here but Britain has this way of typecasting every single soul alive. I’m sure he’s as refreshed by the new experience as comes over in watching it.

OH Aaron. I can’t tell you how funny this is. Ever since House premiered, I have had this niggling thought that he reminded me of someone I once knew. Especially when he breaks out the cigars…
