If DRM goes away, what happens to your music?

Apple Add comments

For the sake of this post, imagine that the record companies completely ditched DRM tomorrow and all songs sold at the iTunes Media Store were DRM-less.

Would Apple create, say, an installer package that runs an app or a script that would remove the DRM from your already purchased songs, or would previously purchased music retain its DRM?

Put your thoughts (if any) in the comments section.

It would be great if they would do that, but I wouldn’t necessarily expect it.

In glancing over the Terms of Service (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/service.html) to see if it had anything interesting to say, I ran across this:
“You acknowledge that some aspects of the Service, Products, and administering of the Usage Rules entails the ongoing involvement of Apple. Accordingly, in the event that Apple changes any part of the Service or discontinues the Service, which Apple may do at its election, you acknowledge that you may no longer be able to use Products to the same extent as prior to such change or discontinuation, and that Apple shall have no liability to you in such case”

So apparently, if Apple just decides they don’t want to run the iTunes Store any longer, they can choose to do so, and all of the 1 billion+ items purchased would just cease to be accessible, at least until someone cracks it again…

I would immediately sell my DRM’ed songs on eBay, since at that point they’d be “RARE!”
