Same-sex marriage and legal privileges

Here’s another example of why I support gay marriage.

Judge to Rule on Testimony from Gay Partners in Embezzlement Case

When two people live together multiple decades, or any amount of time, and have a spousal relationship, why should it be that one person must be a man and one person must be a woman in order to enjoy legal protections such as the spousal privilege? What difference does gender make in this situation? What element does a man and woman couple have that makes their lives more private, and more legally protected, than a same-sex couple? Spousal privilege, like priest-penitent privilege and doctor-patient privilege, should be based on relationship rather than gender, and the best way to legally establish that relationship is to allow homosexuals to marry to make it clear that relationship exists, and hence, to provide the same legal protections.

The real story of Thanksgiving

This is not original writing by yours truly, although it does accurately reflect my views about the holiday. The original author has said publicly that he encourages the reproduction of this story because the propagation of the message is more important than personal credit.

The story of the Pilgrims begins in the early part of the seventeenth century. The Church of England under King James I was persecuting anyone and everyone who did not recognize its absolute civil and spiritual authority. Those who challenged ecclesiastical authority and those who believed strongly in freedom of worship were hunted down, imprisoned, and sometimes executed for their beliefs. A group of separatists first fled to Holland and established a community. After eleven years, about forty of them agreed to make a perilous journey to the New World, where they would certainly face hardships, but could live and worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences. On August 1, 1620, the Mayflower set sail. It carried a total of 102 passengers, including forty Pilgrims led by William Bradford. On the journey, Bradford set up an agreement, a contract, that established just and equal laws for all members of the new community, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Crowding up the intarweb with dogs

All about me No Comments »

The other day I read a tirade about the pointlessness of blogging and the idiocy of bloggers. It was posted on a rather popular site that is functionally, if not in name, a blog. So I decided to crowd up the intarweb even more with pictures of my pets that probably mean something only to me and a couple of other people on this Earth.

For all you anti-bloggers (who express your dislike of blogging through your blog): I own this domain. I own this server. I maintain the site and everything needed to keep it running. If I want my dogs on this page, then I’ll put them here. If you don’t want to see my dogs, you can always go somewhere else.
