Take screenshots of individual windows

Mac OS X No Comments »

Most of us know that command-shiift-3 takes a picture of the entire screen, and that command-shift-4 creates cross-hairs so that an area of the screen can be captured via selection. But here’s one I learned today that I didn’t know before: Command-shift-4, and then space, changes the cross-hairs to a camera, and that camera takes shots of individual complete windows. Very cool.

More self-congratulations

You can’t ignore the howl

WTF? No Comments »

Remember this previous post that everyone ignored about the creepy howling noise in a town just outside of Dayton? Well it’s been picked up by the tabloid Weekly Sun. The headline is, “Howling Beast Terrorizes Ohio Town.” It’s on newsstands right now. If I remember, I’ll buy a copy tomorrow afternoon and scan it to post here.

Fix those iPod nano scratches

Apple No Comments »

I’ve had my 4GB iPod nano for a little more than a week now and I love it. Like many people whose posts I’ve read on the Apple support forums, I’ve experienced some scratching. It was totally my fault for not being careful. But I fixed those scratches right up. Remember this review of RadTech’s IceCreme? I experienced some scratching with my other iPods as well, and Ice Creme buffed those scratches out. I still have some of the polish left over from that original review, and I used it on my iPod nano with excellent results. The scratches completely disappeared.

So if you’re having iPod nano scratch issues, first and foremost, be careful with it! Next, make a stop at RadTech’s Ice Creme page and order a set. RadTech in no way compensates me for this recommendation. I’m just someone who’s willing to recommend good products to my readers.

Do Uno what you’re seeing?

There are people in this world who violently hate brushed metal. They bitch and gripe about it and take any opportunity they can to beat this tired, trivial topic to death yet again. If they took all the energy they consume actively hating brushed metal and invested it in more useful pursuits, we’d be curing cancer on Mars right now (and Earth). Personally, I’m indifferent to it. I don’t especially like it, but I don’t dislike it either. I’ve noticed that different apps use different variations of the brushed metal skin, but I don’t really care.

What I do like, however, is the unified theme that Apple introduced with Tiger. I like it so much, I downloaded Uno, a simple script installer that backs up the system graphics that make up Aqua and replaces them with graphics that turn just about every app into a smooth, simple, semi-white-to-light-gray gradient. Did I mention I like it?

I’ve showed this change to about a dozen people who are Mac users or who are more than passingly familiar with the OS X GUI. The group consists of an unscientific mix of persons who have either complained about brushed metal, or have never mentioned it. Here’s how every conversation has gone so far:
