As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, the site has changed yet again. Geeklog has been replaced by b2evolution and I’ve added a catchy title to the blog that is sure to generate multitudes of questions I don’t want to answer.
I’ve written this blog for a couple of years now and it’s as aimless as the day I started. Most of the time it’s primary purpose seems to be to add to the Google database. I’ve thought about just canning it a hundred times, and I’ve thought about writing for it more often another hundred times. I really can’t say why it exists or why I put the time into maintaining it. It’s here, and it just won’t go away. Hence the new (and probably temporary) title.
I dumped Geeklog for several reasons. First and foremost, the majority of hits to this site are RSS aggregators picking up the feed, and Geeklog’s RSS support is mediocre at best. b2evolution is a significant improvement in that area. Geeklog is very modular and complex, and while that may be fine for more community-based sites that need a portal, for a personal blog its overkill. It’s hard to modify and maintain, and because Geeklog’s upgrade strategy is based on installing the new directly over the old, customizations are easily lost in the maze of code at each upgrade. Interface-wise, I like b2evolution’s layout better and it seems to be lighter weight than Geeklog.
There used to be a forum here even though, as I noted when I started it, there was no demand for it. After several months of listening to forum crickets, I’ve dumped it. There’s no point having it.
Most of the stories from the old install have been carried over. I’ve trimmed out a few that really aren’t relevant anymore or were of temporary value. I’ll be creating redirects for stories linked from other sites over the next few days.
None of the comments have been carried over. That was too much work that I frankly wasn’t willing to do.
User logins at the old site are gone also. You’re welcome to register anew in order to receive notification e-mails.
As far as I know, all the links and pictures on the site should work correctly. If something doesn’t function like it should, please notify me.
Thanks and enjoy the new layout.

This is a test comment to make sure everything works correctly. Oh, and here’s a smiley.

Nice look. I prefer it to the old geeklog one you had.

Thank you very much. Your site isn’t too shabby either!

Any chance you could add a link to your sites home page from each of the stories? I know I could just click back, but after leaving comments I’d need to click it twice. Just a thought.

Mark, that’s a good idea. Tonight I’ll experiment with making the top banner a link back to the site root and if it works ok I’ll make the change permanent.

Guess what… no need for me to edit the code. b2 has a setting in the admin panel that let me add the small, unobtrusive home link to the bottom left of the banner.
