Eliminate the need for a KVM switch for your Mac mini

Most people I know who want a Mac mini want to run it concurrently with their existing Windows machine. Usually that means you need a KVM switch to change a single keyboard and mouse between systems. If you have two displays, one USB keyboard, one USB mouse, a Mac mini, and a Windows system, there is a free software solution that will spare you the cost of a KVM switch.

It’s called osx2x and it allows you to move the mouse off the right of your Mac monitor, for instance, and onto the Windows monitor. The keyboard plugged into the Mac will likewise control the Windows machine when the mouse is moved over.

Setup isn’t very difficult. First, install a VNC server on the Windows machine, such as TightVNC. Plug your USB mouse and keyboard into the Mac. Then, install osx2x on the Mac. Establish a connection to the Windows machine running VNC and you’re ready to go.

It’s very nifty, and can be used between two Macs in a similar way.
