This article has to have one of the stupidest headlines I’ve read in a while: “iPods pose security risk for enterprises, Gartner says.” And the content isn’t exactly all that interesting either.
The article continues on to say that any portable storage device, such as USB keys, media readers of all kinds, USB or Firewire hard disks, disc burners, PDAs, other MP3 players, and (my addition) floppy disks are a security risk. That’s not exactly news - it’s been pretty well known since the invention of the 8″ floppy disk that corporate data could walk out the door without anyone knowing. Singling out the iPod as an insecure device… that’s just Apple bashing. There’s no reason in the world to put the iPod in the headline as opposed to other portable storage devices. But the headline “Portable storage devices pose security risk for enterprises, Gartner says,” gets a big yawn and a “Duh!” from everyone. Nope, gotta go after the iPod, gotta go out of our way to point out that a hot new device is all bad.
If you don’t like Apple or their products, fine. I could care less. But purposefully spreading FUD via a non-news item is irresponsible and irritating.
